Martinet Test

  • Objective: To assess the cardiovascular response to moderate dynamic muscle effort and evaluate heart rate and blood pressure recovery post-exercise. Often used as a preventive screening tool to safely "prescribe" physical activity.
  • ⚙️ Equipment Needed:
    • Stopwatch.
    • Flat and solid surface.
    • Blood pressure cuff (manual or semi-automated).
    • Heart rate monitor or ECG.
    • Logbook for recording results.
  • Protocol:
    • Starting Position: Standing, feet 20 cm apart, heels slightly lifted, back straight.
    • Effort: Perform 30 full deep squats (flexions-extensions) in 40 seconds, maintaining a strictly vertical torso.
    • Data Collection:
      • Pre-exercise: Measure resting heart rate (P₀) and resting blood pressure.
      • Post-exercise (at 40s): Immediately record heart rate (P₁) and post-exercise blood pressure.
      • 1 minute post-exercise: Record heart rate (P₂) and blood pressure.
  • Evaluation:
    • Heart Rate Response: Post-exercise HR should not exceed resting HR by more than 40 beats/min.
    • Recovery: HR should return to near-resting levels within 1 to 2 minutes.
    • Blood Pressure: Values must remain within physiological norms during effort and recover fully within 2 minutes.
    • Warning Signs: Excessive blood pressure spikes, irregular rhythm, or slow recovery require further cardiological evaluation.
  • ✅ Recommendations: Perform under constant conditions (same time, temperature), allow 48 hours of rest before testing, ensure proper squat technique, and screen for cardiac/blood pressure history before starting.
