Balke treadmill protocol for evaluating aerobic capacity and cardiorespiratory fitness.
Blake Treadmill Test
Objective
To estimate $VO_2$ max and aerobic capacity via a prolonged effort at a constant speed, with progressive treadmill incline until exhaustion. Originally designed for cardiac patients, it is also applicable to athletes seeking to measure cardiovascular endurance.
Protocol
- Warm-up: 10 minutes at 0% incline, comfortable walking speed.
- Start: Set speed to 5.3 km/h (3.3 mph) for men; 4.8 km/h (3.0 mph) for women, 0% incline.
- Incline Progression:
- Men: After 1 min, increase to 2%, then +1% each minute.
- Women: +2.5% every 3 minutes.
- End: Stop when the subject can no longer maintain speed/rhythm.
- Target Duration: 9–15 minutes is representative of good aerobic endurance.
Evaluation ($VO_2$ max estimation)
Using total time (T in minutes):
- Men: VO_2 max \approx 1.444 \times T + 14.99
- Women: VO_2 max \approx 1.38 \times T + 5.22
Recommendations
- Standardize conditions (time of day, hydration, equipment).
- Ensure 48 hours of rest before the test.
- Screen for cardiac contraindications
