Assessment of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) to evaluate aerobic capacity.
VO₂ max Test
Objective: To evaluate an athlete’s maximal aerobic capacity, which is defined as the maximum volume of oxygen the body can consume per minute per kilogram of body weight (ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹).
⚙️ Equipment Needed:
Cycle ergometer or motorized treadmill.
Respiratory gas analysis system (face mask, flow meter, O₂/CO₂ analyzer).
Heart rate monitor (ECG or chest strap).
Electrocardiograph (if available for medical monitoring).
Stopwatch and logbook.
Scale for weight measurement.
Protocol (Standard incremental test example):
Installation: Equip the athlete with the mask and heart rate monitor. Verify the calibration of the respiratory system.
Warm-up: 5 to 10 minutes at low intensity (50% of estimated VO₂ max).
Incremental Phase: Regular increase in workload:
Cycle ergometer: + 25 W every 2 minutes.
Treadmill (Bruce protocol): Increase in speed and incline every 3 minutes.
Termination Criteria (at least one of the following):
