Assessment of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) to evaluate aerobic capacity.

VO₂ max Test

  • Objective: To evaluate an athlete’s maximal aerobic capacity, which is defined as the maximum volume of oxygen the body can consume per minute per kilogram of body weight (ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹).
  • ⚙️ Equipment Needed:
    • Cycle ergometer or motorized treadmill.
    • Respiratory gas analysis system (face mask, flow meter, O₂/CO₂ analyzer).
    • Heart rate monitor (ECG or chest strap).
    • Electrocardiograph (if available for medical monitoring).
    • Stopwatch and logbook.
    • Scale for weight measurement.
  • Protocol (Standard incremental test example):
    • Installation: Equip the athlete with the mask and heart rate monitor. Verify the calibration of the respiratory system.
    • Warm-up: 5 to 10 minutes at low intensity (50% of estimated VO₂ max).
    • Incremental Phase: Regular increase in workload:
      • Cycle ergometer: + 25 W every 2 minutes.
      • Treadmill (Bruce protocol): Increase in speed and incline every 3 minutes.
    • Termination Criteria (at least one of the following):
      • VO₂ plateau (maximum reached despite increasing effort).
      • RER (Respiratory Exchange Ratio) > 1.10.
      • Heart rate approaching theoretical max HR (± 10 bpm).
      • Muscular fatigue or symptoms (dizziness, nausea).
    • Recovery: 5 minutes at low load, followed by a cool-down period and measurement of vital signs.
  • Evaluation:
    • Absolute VO₂ max (L·min⁻¹) and relative VO₂ max (ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹).
    • Ventilatory Thresholds (VT1, VT2) if analyzed.
    • Heart rate vs. power or speed curve.
  • ✅ Recommendations:
    • Follow the same protocol for longitudinal comparisons.
    • Calibrate the gas analyzer thoroughly before each test.
    • Perform the test after 48 hours of rest and at the same time of day.
    • Disclose any medical contraindications (cardiac or respiratory).
