RESTQ (Recovery-Stress Questionnaire) Administration Protocol

Objective:

To evaluate a person's stress and recovery levels over a recent period (generally the last 3 days and nights).

Required Equipment:

  • Printed or digital version of the RESTQ-Sport or RESTQ-Work questionnaire.
  • A pen or digital device (computer, tablet).
  • A quiet place for administration.

Instructions Given to the Participant:

"You are going to answer a series of statements regarding your activities, and your emotional, physical, and mental feelings over the last three days and nights. Please indicate how often each situation or emotion was experienced."

Use the following scale to answer:

ScoreMeaning
0Never
1Seldom
2Sometimes
3Often
4Very often
5Almost always
6Always

Administration Duration:

Approximately 10 to 20 minutes depending on the version used.

Results Analysis:

Group the items by dimension:

  • General stress, emotional stress, sleep problems, social conflicts, etc.
  • Emotional recovery, sleep quality, leisure, physical relaxation, etc.

Calculate:

  • Average the scores for each sub-dimension.
  • Calculate an overall average for:
    • Stress Factors
    • Recovery Factors

Interpret:

  • High stress + low recovery → increased risk of chronic fatigue, overtraining, or injury (in athletes).
  • Low stress + high recovery → good psychophysiological balance.

Practical Tips:

  • Administer the questionnaire regularly (e.g., weekly or after competitions).
  • Compare the evolution of scores over time.
  • Adapt the intervention (recovery plan, training load reduction, psychological support...) based on the results.
