Evaluate speed, coordination, and change of direction ability over a 10x5m shuttle course.
10 × 5m Shuttle Sprint Test
Test Objective
To measure speed, coordination, and the ability to quickly change direction over a short distance.
⚙️ Required Equipment
- A flat and even surface (sports hall, synthetic turf, or athletics track).
- 2 clearly marked lines placed 5 meters apart.
- A precise stopwatch (or photoelectric cells / timing gates if available).
- An assistant for timing.
- Cones to demarcate the ends of the running zone.
- Result recording sheet.
Test Protocol
- The athlete begins behind one of the lines in a stationary start position.
- On the start signal, they sprint to the opposite line (5 meters away), touch the ground (or clearly cross the line), and then return.
- They complete 5 round trips (which equals 10 lengths of 5 meters = 50 meters in total).
- The stopwatch starts precisely on the signal and stops at the completion of the final round trip.
Evaluation
- The total time is recorded in seconds (e.g., 11.20 s).
- This test evaluates:
- Linear speed over short distances.
- Reaction and execution speed.
- Braking (deceleration), pivoting, and rapid restarting (re-acceleration) capabilities.
✅ Recommendations
- Conduct a comprehensive warm-up: light jogging, running drills, and change of direction exercises.
- Always touch the ground or clearly cross the line at each end to ensure validity.
- Do not slip or turn too early before reaching the designated line.
- Repeat the test twice if necessary, and retain the best recorded time
